Chapter members gathered at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital for a hands-on look at Axon MetaCoach — AI-powered, voice-interactive simulation training designed to strengthen de-escalation, communication and operational readiness in healthcare settings.

Meeting Recap

Thank you to Axon and presenter Paul Ramsey for a strong session, and to everyone who attended. Lunch was provided by Axon.

The challenge discussed: Verbal de-escalation is the skill most healthcare staff use the most and practice the least. Traditional annual classroom sessions are hard to schedule, role-play can feel artificial, and it is difficult to measure whether an individual can actually handle an agitated patient or family member.

What Axon MetaCoach is: An AI-powered practice platform where staff speak out loud to realistic virtual patients and visitors. The character reacts to tone, pacing and word choice in real time. Each session ends with a performance report and coaching notes. It runs on a phone or tablet — no classroom and no special headset required.

Healthcare-specific scenarios cover situations such as acute psychiatric crisis, dementia-related agitation, post-anesthesia aggression, intoxicated visitors at the ER entrance, family members demanding access, and language barriers — with versions for clinical staff, non-clinical staff and security officers.

  • Realistic hospital environments (rooms, lobbies, waiting areas)
  • Lifelike virtual characters that respond in real time
  • Voice interaction and adaptive AI coaching
  • Performance reporting and learning-management analytics
  • Modules tailored for security, clinical and non-clinical roles

Materials from the session are shared with permission from Axon.
